Good Morning Everyone
I need a bit more help. I replaced my burnt out starter last night and my TEA-20 rolled over like never before. So I would say the starter had been weak for a few months now. When I fired the tractor up, I choked it abit like I always do. The tractor would run for a few seconds then stop. Again I would choke it and the same thing would happen. I took the carb off a week or so ago and cleaned it and put it back on. I thought I did it right but apparently not. What is wrong now? I managed to save the carb gasket and all the parts. I cleaned each part very carefully and re-assembled the carb., put it back on and then waited to get my starter back. So last night I thought I was good to go. Now it wont stay running. Its almost like its flooding itself out when I choke it and it runs until the gas that was injected as a result of choking to get it started runs out.I think my problem is in the carb now. As a point of reference, the reason I pulled the carb off was that it was leaking like heck. now the leak has stopped but it wont allow gas thru. Any help would be great. thanks and happy thanks giving to everyone

The idle mixture screw may be out too far. It regulates the air. If it is out too far, too much air may be entering and the carb will look for more gas and less air to compensate, making the choke necessary. Try adjusting the idle mixture screw in slightly, say a half turn at a time and test that way.

I think Rod has a good suggestion. Make sure your filters are all ok. Remove the line from the carb and see if fuel flows steady. If so, check the filter in the elbow of the carb where the line enters. If all that is ok, you could have an electrical problem, perhaps with coil or condensor. Neither of those is easy to test. I always replace condensor first as it is cheaper and maybe you have a spare lying around to use to see if that solves the problem. Of course all that assumes you reassembled the carb and linkage correctly. HTH.

try removing the fuel line and blowing air back thru the line and tank the sediment bowl assembly on these tractors is a real weak spot there is an internal screen or supposed to be in the tank on the assembly if it gets clogged or comes off dirt can enter the system and get into the sediment bowl assembly. Before you do anything else you should make sure you have good steady fuel flow. regards

Hi Rod The fuel line is clear, when I took the carb off the 1st time I forgot to close the fuel shut off valve, and gas poured out of the line that goes into the carb. So that appears to be fine. The reason I took the carb off in the 1st place was the fact that gas would leak out of the carb when the tractor was sitting there and not running. Thats why I had to shut off the fuel each time I was done with it. So I thought maybe I had a stuck float or something. Now, once I cleaned the carb and put it back on, no leaks, Which is good, but now it wont stay running. I think maybe the carb setting were thrown off when I cleaned it or else I dint go far enough taking it apart when I did. I only took apart what I could see. I didnt mess with the set screws or anything like that. So Im thinking I may have to take it back off and do it from top to bottom. AWWWW to be a rookie when it comes to old tractors, But again Im still having fun. So Ill keep plugging away. Thanks again

on the 24t2 carb you can unscrew the main jet that is the big knob facing the front of the engine take the whole thing out it just unscrews then use a screw driver to take the seat part out of it, probably dirt in there, also do you have the needle in place ok, the float just moves up and down against it could be stuck somehow. How about the carb to manifold gasket is it ok?

What carb do you have, a 24T2? It might just need to be adjusted. Assuming a Zenith 24T2, I think the starting point is with the top screw 1 full turn out, and the bottom 1 1/2 or so. The top one (low speed) works the opposite way from what you might think i.e. screwing it in is richer. The bottom one is for higher rpms,
Jim

Sorry to hear your Fergie is giving trouble! You could disconnect the air supply to the carb. and squirt a little gas in there to see if it will stay running if it does you have a fuel problem.
There is a Screw on the bottom of the Zenith Carb Try to remove it completely and check to see if fuel is coming out continuously(use a small container) this will verify a good supply of fuel to the carb. bowl. It is also recommended to do this every 60 working hours. If only a bit of fuel comes out I think you have a stuck (closed) needle valve you will need to remove and open up your carb. The needle valve is threaded and is made of brass. You can buy rebuild kits for 30 to 35 can$ includes gaskets and new needle valve. It may be that the tab on the float got bent the last time you had the carb off. Try to get a hose on the fuel inlet and blow thru it and move the float up and to see if air will blow thru and stop by action of the needle valve. Gary
