first and easiest - check your timing, it might be too retarded.

Bgraves, As much as the other posts may be valid, don't discount the carb settings being possibly to lean and or timing. Check your plugs for hint of having too lean a mixture, if they are whitish gray it may just too lean.

Good Luck

I would recommend that you remove the radiator and have it professionally cleaned inside and out. I found sooooo o much junk and sludge inside mine. Now it runs at 180 deg. F all the time.

After all that work, you may find that your problem is the head gasket. You need not always get water in the oil with a blown head gasket. I eventually traced a similar problem to some previous owner ramming a metric nut on one of the head studs, and stripping the thread - hence the head wasn't torqued up properly, and the gasket went.

Remove the valve rocker cover and look in there when the engine is stone cold for any signs of water condensation - it's often a good clue - as will the presence of any 'rust' in the rocker cover areas.

Good luck.

Oh yes, almost forgot one other thing, if you get round to taking the head off, check round the back of the block (nearest the driver) for sludge and muck that has collected and sunk over the years. You can vacuum it out with a wet and dry vacuum with a length of flattened 15mm copper pipe as an adaptor to get into the core holes in the block. Getting rid of this sludge will reduce the chances of getting hot spots in the block, and improve your engine's cooling and reduce thermal stresses. It's worth taking your time over this, and is more fun with several cold beers at hand!
