Good Morning Everyone. Well here I am again begging for more advise. I took off the carb again and this time spent about 2 hours cleaning every little nook and cranny. I re-assembled it, still using the old gaskets ( they were in very good shape ) I checked the float by putting it in a bowl of water, it floats just fine. This time I took all the jets out and really cleaned them good. I put the carb back together and pulled out my manual to check for the settings. I set the carb according to my manual. I put the carb back on and still nothing. one this I did notice this time was at the back of the carb there is this little arm or wire if you will that attaches the choke to the top of the carb. Forgive me I dont know what this is called. This arm slides up and down in a way that I dont think it should. At the bottom of this arm where it slides into a sleave, there is a set screw that appears to me to hold this divise from moving within the sleave. Does this have to be set in any certain way? Again any help would be great

Barry,
Several months ago I had the same problem. I sensed a carb. problem and removed, disassembled and completely cleaned everything. Including running a matching gauge wire thru each opening or port and then blowing with compressed air. Reassembled and tried starting three times with no luck. Went thru the whole process the fourth time and bingo, she ran like a charm. I suspect the smallest bit of anything in a jet or needle can cause a problem. I think you may be getting closer after two tries. Good luck,
Gary

Does it not start at all? Or does it start and then cut off after a few moments? In your earlier post, I think the latter was the situation, but I'm confused about what is happening now. Do you have the two mixture screws set properly, or at least close enough to test? What does it do if after you remove the air input hose you spray some starter fluid into the carb throat? If you do that and it doesn't fire, then you likely have an electrical problem. You might want to do that to be certain you are working on the correct side of the tractor.

And a very good morning to you, too, even though it's afternoon here.

Don't know the history on this posting, but it rings a few bells . . . . . .

OK, the top butterfly valve on your carb (nearest the inlet manifold) is the throttle - the butterfly valve on the left of your carb as you look at it is the choke (I'm assuming TE/TO series here). The wire you mention is designed so that when you put the choke on then the sleeve alters the angle of the wire, which then opens the throttle a tad to give you more revs. Make sense so far? I don't think you need to do anything more than ensure that it's all working, no further adjustment is needed other than seeing it's loose.

If all your linkage is in working order, try checking your oil bath air cleaner to ensure it has the right level of the right oil in it - too little oil or the wrong oil means you end up with a weak mixture and the **)^%$(*& won't start even if you remove the air inlet pipe and choke it manually (watch out doing this, if it pops back at you, it stings). Bought a TE that was tiresome to start and it turned out it was the air cleaner problem I mentioned - now it starts first turn, no problem. I also cleaned the carb till it shone, got nowhere. Let me know how it goes.

Oh, I am of course working on the assumption that you've got nice big fat sparks on the plugs??

Good luck

Hi James
Yes have lots of spark, I will check the oil bath tonight when I get home. The rest of the wires ie: spark plug, distributor etc, are all new. So Im almost positive its in the carb, But I will check the oil tonight. Thanks again

how about the carb to manifold gasket is it sealing correctly if not you will have weak vacumn into engine, also when wires were done are they on correctly rotation of distributor is counter clockwise it is easy to put them on wrong way? Do you have the manual section that traces fuel flow in the carb. I have had lots of dirt in it and still ran just not to good. have you tried spraying fuel or ether in to see if tractor runs on it?

Its weird you said the tractor was running fine before the starter failed and now all this !I have two carbs and both give me the same problem . The carbs are very old and worn the shaft to the throtel butterfly can move back and forth this lets air to pass in and not over the jets .I think this is my problem you might want to check this good luck Barry.
