Ferguson Questions

What should one lookout for when buying a 20 or 30 Ferguson? I've read about cracked engine blocks - but is this readily obvious, especially after a nice paint job?

These tractors are getting up in age, 50 or so years. Are these tractors simply getting wore out? How much life can one expect out of one of these?

How much of a bush hog type rotary cutter can one attach to one of these tractors?

With fluid in the tires, how much does a 20 and 30 weigh?

Has anyone ever seen a ROPS on one of the tractors?

Thanks!
Bill

ROPS for Furguson TO-20. I found an Australian company called Barco that has US dealers. The ROPS is about $400 i think. Try the website bareco.com.au. They can set you up with a dealer somewhere near you.

Bill: These tractors are like the Energizer Bunny- they just going and going and going.....

I have a '49 TO-20 that I use to bush-hog my 27 acres with a 5-footer....and I have some large hills. I hog once a month..... and this tractor never gives me any trouble! More reliable than a new one! ....and cost a lot less. I had to do a few small repairs when I first got it....and it looked like it had been abused....but after 53 years, it's still going strong. If only they still made things like this!

I bought an 8N a while back, for the purpose of parting out- it was a good runner. When I took it apart, I saw that the crankshaft had never been ground.....everything in the engine looked original! Amazing!

For an inspection outline, visit Big Deans website. I'd expect you'll get many guys telling you that a H.Ferguson 20/30 tractor will run a 6' cutter. Don't do it! These tractor are too light for them. For proper advice on HP requirements for a rotary cutter visit the dealers that sell them. I have a 4' Woods M4 rotary cutter that uses all the HP my TO30 has to cut hood high thick grass/weeds/multi-flora rose. On the other hand, I can cut 2" brush with it. I keep the blades sharp and my engine is in excellent shape. If you're only cutting pasture ground about 2-3' high a 5' unit will work, but expect the tractor front to raise up occasionally when you lift the cutter(uphill travel). I'd recommend buying subject to an engine compression check(easily done). If a block has been pinned the projections on the block will be evident. The weight of a TO30 is 2,570 lbs. Calcium Chloride filled tires add approx. 450 lbs each for 11x28 tires. Deans tractor inspection article is excellent and the result of years of experience.
