I hope someone may be able to help a mechanical novice. I have a 1949 Fergie TEA. Currently it is running fine (once started)for about 20-30 mins of work it then starts to miss once or twice quickly progressing to where I am stuttering and backfiring along. There is hardly any power left in the machine to go forward let alone run anything off the PTO. On turning off the tractor there is a pop about a second or two later. I have recently replaced the distributor cap, rotor, points, and condenser. It was running fine afer that for quite a while, but now has this problem. Do I need to be looking at replacing the leads, or is it a fuel problem? I was reading another message that mentioned that the seal from the carb to the intake manifold could cause popping if it was faulty. I know that mine is not in the best order. Do I need to adjust the fuel mix? It seems strange to me that it can run fine for 20 minsor so then like clockwork, pack it in... I can definately say that kicking the tractor doesn't fix it, believe me I've tried! HEEEELLLLLPPPP!!!!

My bet is on the coil.

Billy - you could also try swapping the coil - often when they get old, they'll run fine when cold, but once warmed a bit by engine heat the insulation in them will break down, and you'll get misfiring.

The pop after you switch off when the engine's hot is quite normal (well, mine does it, anyway) and is caused by the vapours from after you have switched the ignition off igniting in the exhaust. Don't adjust the mixture if it was running OK before.

If the problem was the inlet manifold/carb gasket, it would run like a pig immediately you put the choke in.

The fact you need an extra something to start it suggests weak spark - did you change the coil before as well?? Have you checked the points gap and condition recently? Has the timing slipped? Do you run it on petrol only, or petrol and TVO? If you switch off on TVO and let the engine go cold, it will be a pig to start and will not behave until the engine is hot again.

Just some thoughts.

Just an update. I have replaced the coil, have got new leads and it still won't go. I should mention at this point that whilst using it the other day, it did it's usual trick then stopped altogether. I haven't been able to start it since.I have followed the electric through and there is a spark from the coil to the distributor cap, but there is now no spark at the leads. I have checked and reset the points to .010" as described in the original user manual. I am lost as to what I can check next. Is it possible that the new condenser that I put in a few months back has now broken as a result of the whole missing, popping etc. If so would this be the cause of no spark at the leads? I am quite stumped.

Stop press! Problem solved. It turns out that the nearly new rotor was grounded and taking all the spark. Another new rotor put in and she starts beautifully. It is also running fine now, beyond the 20 mins, which I think could be put down to the new coil and/or rotor(?) Ah, the joys of the fergie TEA!

Billy , I would try replacing the ignition switch.
Sounds to me that it is heating up and giving you intermitent spark. Normally backfiring is an indictation of erratic spark. My 2 cents.. Dave...

I had a similar situation with the added bonus of a very large cloud of white smoke, oil and flame spewing from my exhaust pipe. I discoverd that one of my spark plugs wires was breaking down (#4). I then replaced all of the spark plugs (NKG) and wires and have had a great running unit ever since.Maybe you could give that a try too.

Thanks Glenn, I will try that as it is the last thing on that side that I can do. They are ancient so it could be it I will let u know how I get on. Another clue is that it is basically impossible to start without using CRC engine starter... I am presuming that this might be related to the problem??
