I just recently purchased this tractor and want to know the proper oil to use. My local ford tractor dealer recomended permatran 3 or equiv. Is this ok? after reading some of these post it has me wondering. I flushed the old. set it up on blocks and put in 1/2 gallon of kerosene with the oil and let in run a 1/2 hour on blocks with the pto engaged and then drained it. Then put in permatran 3. Should I stick with this oil?
Also what oil should be used in the wagner front end loader on this tractor? 20w non detergent is my guess?

I have a wagner loader on my to-30 and I use the same hydraulic oil that I use in the backhoe I have. Can't remember the name of it but it is commercially available hydraulic oil and is blue in color. I've been using it for about 8 years now with no problems.

Regarding the loader oil, if you have a pump on the front and a reservoir in the loader, as I do on my Wagner, I think 20w non detergent would be fine. I use 30w, and it works fine for me here in VA. If you are in colder weather, the 20w actually might be better. I don't think they are real sensitive, but I wouldn't use multi wt. or anything less than 20w, if for no other reason it probably would leak past the pump seals quicker.

On the first part, check your oil container if it mentions designation GL1. It might say GL5 which in this case is not the proper oil, has to be GL1. Your tractor uses Mineral oil 80-90 and the Massey number is M1103.

On the second part, does your tractor have an additional Hydraulic pump and reservoir? If not and it runs from spool valves from near the underseat, the oil you added in your rear end uses same oil drawn from same place as hyd. pump sits within the rear end housing.

Good Luck

Were do I find the Gl-1 or GL-5 on the tractor?oil container?
2nd part: it is a seperate reservoir it holds the fluid in the tubing of the front end loader and has a seperate pump on the front of the tractor for it. It is a wagner front end loader.

Jeff, I did mention the oil designation you would find is on the oil container and not the tractor. If it doesn't show those, perhaps you should enquire from the source it was bought from. As for the hydraulic Phil has answered your question quite clearly in a previous post.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone for your help.
3rd generation ferguson owner.
I want to make sure it is still there for the fourth. My grandfather bought this tractor new and sold it in the early seventies and I bought it back from the guy he sold it to. But my grandfather doesnt remember some the particulars of oil type etc. You guys have been a great help.
