Change Antifreeze?

My Ferguson TO-20 runs at about a steady 170 degrees in the summer, and I am wondering if I should mess with success--i.e. flush out the radiator and stir up any sediment or create a leaky situation when I don't now have one. I really don't know what type of antifreeze was in the radiator when I bought the tractor 18 months ago. So far I have done nothing after 2 summer seasons. I don't use the tractor in the winter.

As I see it, you have a decision to make - create a leak (or make one more obvious) by adding anti-freeze, or lose the engine. $20 of anti-freeze, or a new block $250?? - to my mind it's a no brainer.

I'd check the concentration of the anti-freeze with a specific gravity anti-freeze tester (looks like a turkey baster) first to see if you need to add more. If you do, see paragraph 1.

Not using or using the tractor over the winter makes no difference on your decision - unless of course the tractor is kept in a nice, warm garage in which case don't worry.

However, the cost of the anti-freeze will be less than the cost of the heating.

A good flush through should do the old girl good, and adding fresh anti-freeze now could possibly save your engine, and show you the weak points in the cooling system before you boil the engine next summer.

Just my thoughts.
