When replacing my radiator on my 1953 TO-30 I noticed my front axle center section has two cracks in it. One on each side of the center support. They don't go all the way through and the center support is wallowed out pretty bad. What do I do? Replace? Weld? Where could I find a used/new center section? Any help is appreciated! Yes the tractor has a loader on it, I'm assuming this is what may have caused it. Overloading the front end.

Tom. my TO-35 was in the same condition when I bought it. The center axle is cast steel not cast iron and is weldable. To spark test for cast iron take a side grinder and watch the sparks, cast iron will have fine orange sparks, and cast steel will have bright yellow sparks. If in doubt try it on a piece of known cast iron and compare it to sparks from steel plate, the difference should be quite apparent. Grind out the cracks, and pre heat the area to a couple hundred degrees to drive the moisture out of the metal, fill weld the cracks and build up the wallowed out area. Buy a new pivot pin bushing and take it with the axle to the local machine shop and have it bored to fit the bushing. Mine works good as new.

Hi Tom. I have the same problem. I guess there were many problems with the cast iron in those days as there are many Fergies out there with cracked blocks too. I have some photos atLink

if>Link you would like to see them.

Oops! I purged most of my pictures from my photo album and the pictures of the front axle were among those I removed. Sorry.

My '53 TO30 has the same thing. The cracks are hairline, and don't seem to be changing. I decided not to worry about them after hearing similar reports. Ken

My 51 TO30 has those same cracks too! They are hairline cracks... I always wondered why they never got worse...Wonder how many other TO's have it? It looks to be cast iron....beyond my welding capabilities....
