8 volt?

A friend told me he has used 8 volt batteries in 8ns and Fergusons. He said it doesn't require a diffrent voltage regulator/ generator.

Have any of you all heard of this?

Hi, I gotta put my two cents worth in on this. I believe the info that the other fellows gave you is true for a TO Ferguson because it uses a Delco charging system. These systems for some reason tend to put more voltage to the coil then Autolite systems do and therefore they START when the weather gets cold. I have a 1947 Willys CJ2A
with an Autolite charging and starter system and this gave me fits trying to start it in the winter. Everyone told me to convert to 12V as this is the easy way out, but this is a restored vehicle an I wanted to maintain origiality as much as possible so I converted mine to 8V. I had an oldtimer who had worked with ignition for over 50 yrs. and he helped me hook it up. It works great. I have had no problem whatsoever, and guess what it starts! As far as the extra voltage this is not a problem because 2 volts or so is not going to do any harm they overbuilt the the components anyway. Shawn

All set..... let's begin !

Do you want to spend big money ?
Do you want to burn the points ?
Do you want to burn the coil ?
Do you want to burn all the lights ?
Do you want to burn generator ?
Do you want to burn voltage regulator ?

If all your answers are YES then buy a 8 volt battery.

If all your answers are NO then stay away from 8 volt battery...be sure to have your wires and contacts clean bright and tigth.

There is no reason for a healty tractor to
fail to start with a 6 volt system.

Frank,
Your friend may be getting by somehow but he is defying normal battery charging theory. The generator puts out more than is required, and the regulator brings it down to the correct voltage to charge the (6 volt) battery.
If the regulator is set to charge a 6 volt battery, it won't charge an 8 volt battery. It might be possible to use the same generator though (with an 8 volt regulator), as long as he keeps it revved up fairly well. But if you have the urge to modernize the electrical system, what most people are doing is using a generic car alternator with a built-in regulator, and a 12v battery. Pretty inexpensive and reliable, and handy if everything else you have around is 12 volt. The 6 volt starter can usually cope with this if it is only used for short times.

Just general Info.. I store my TO-20 in the U.P. of Michigan and has a 6 volt system. I've started it on the first turn with choke half way out at -10 to -15F after about a couple of months without running it. Just thought I would mention what a TO-20 is capable of with a well charged 6 Volt battery & good set of plugs.

Why would you want to install a 8V battery? It was +4F this morning, and my 6V system started my tractor easily, and I haven't removed the 30W summer oil yet. Don't buy the small 6ga battery cables for 12V systems, they won't carry enough amperage for the starter. Buy at least 2ga, the original cables are 0ga and work best. Reattach the Pos ground cable to the engine block instead of the dash to eliminate the poor conections where the componets are bolted together. Perform maintence on the system per owners manual and you'll be quite pleased.

I get the point.However, it is a nuisance when the battery is dead and there are no other 6 volt systems to jump start from.

Some one told me that putting the charger on the battery twice a month for a few hours improves the battery's life. Does this ring true?
