Gearshift Pin?

At the base of the gearshift lever on my 1951 TO30, there is a "shift lever pin" that is loose and consistently threatens to come all the way out. It appears to be the original pin for the hole, but I cannot figure out what is supposed to hold it in place. Usually the bottom edge of the dust/water shield located just above this pin, keeps it from coming out all the way, but I know it is just a matter of time before the pin will be lost forever in one of my fields. I have purchased the Owners Manual and Dealer Shop Manual for the tractor, but cannot locate any details on this area of the tractor. I am new to the antique tractor world, and I am learning new things everyday. Can anyone shed a little light on what I may be able to do to fix this situation?

Thanks,

Mark Robson

The pin (I think I can imagine which one it is) was probably originally swaged over at each end, stopping it from moving either forward or back. You could repeat this, or take the 'modern' approach and clean/degrease the pin and hole as much as possible, and then use Loctite 'Threadloc' or similar high tack/low strength adhesive to keep the pin in position.

If you want to repeat the swaging, strike the pin hard with a centre punch at one end several times while stopping it from sliding out the other end. Then change ends and repeat. The aim is to 'spread' the pin at each end to prevent it sliding out.
