Hello Jon - It's a pretty good bet you have a TO-35. My 1960 parts book shows the 23C as availably in the TO series, and the Delco electrics indicate US manufacture. The FE's had Lucas and CAV electrics. The glow plugs were fitted after serial no. 188 851. As the head was different for them, it was probably original; the thermostart in the intake manifold was probably added later to help starting. (The best starting assist is a block heater or a heater in the lower rad hose.) The serial number would be S(tandard chassis) D(Diesel, Standard Motors 23C) and F if you have a single stage clutch or M if it's a two stage, with a number after 188 050. They switched to Perkins I think in 1959, but there must have been some overlap in numbers and production because I have a 35 SNM 177 934 with a Perkins. I think it's a 1980. The N in the second place indicates a Perkins diesel engine. The Standard is a very long-lasting engine - about 35 hp, smooth running, about 35 hp compared to the Perkins 38. I had a Standard with over 5000 hours and the crank was still standard size. Lots of parts still available, and more help on the Massey discussion site here (in the grey bar at the top of the page). Hope this helps. Jack Wetmore in Fredericton NB Can.
