Why do TO-20's blocks crack? and how do you tell if they are cracked? Is there any way to prevent it from cracking?

As Rusty said, freezing is the usual cause. However, running the engine too hot (i.e. radiator nearly dry), and then adding cold water too soon will also cause cracking.

To prevent block and head problems, always check fluid levels before you doa day's work, and next time you have the head off, use a flattened piece of 15mm copper pipe as a nozzle on a vacuum cleaner to suck all the old crud out from the water ways in the block (especially near the back, where fluid flow rates are slower and the crud sttles out). I got about 2 pounds weight out of mine.

Also keep your water pump and radiator in good condition. Preventive maintenance is the key - a bit of time spent now will save you $$$$ in the long run.

Take the head off and the cracks can be seen between the cylinders. Everyone has different opinions as to the reason they crack. One sure way is to have no antifreeze in the block.
