I need help!!! I have completely rebuilt the engine and carburetor on my TE-20. The over haul manual called for a closed position clearance for the float of 9/32 and an open position of 15/32.

Currently I have the open position set at 11/32 and the tractor still runs EXTREMELY RICH!!! In fact, I can close the low idle needle valve and the power needle valve and the tractor WILL STILL RUN!!!! The only time the tractor will run smooth is when I have shut the fuel off at the tank; and then, the engine will run smooth briefly until it has expended the fuel left in the bowl.

What causes the above to occur? And, what do I need to do to fix it?????

Sounds like a float issue or/with dirt in needle.
Just dissassemble carb and clean it properly preferably overnight in carb cleaner solution. Then be very careful inspecting for small specks of dirt.

Good Luck

Norm

Carlson,
I have had similar problems with my Fergie
and found 1)a pinhole in the float allowing
fuel to "sink" it, 2)lacquer build up on
the needle oriface.
Solder took care of the leak and a good
carb soak took care of the build up.
I guess the carb had not been deep cleaned
since the 50s....
Good luck.
Mike

Do you have aload ajusting screw,or a power jet.Something must be missing or the float has gas in it or the float valve is leaking.

Gordon,

Thank you for responding. Yes, the carburetor has a power jet. Oddly enough, I have replaced every replaceable part in this '52 Marvel Shebler carburetor. If it's possible, the carburetor body may just be wore out.

Be certain the float does not rub the body of carb. This will prevent the float from shutting gas off as the bowl fills. It does not take much to cause problems.
