Was out around the tractor shed last week and noticed a new puddle under my TO20. Unfortunately, instead of the usual black, this puddle was gray. A check of the dipstick confirmed my worst fear: water in the oil. I drained it and put in fresh oil, then cranked it to see what happened. It started on the first bump of the key, ran great, no unusual noises. Another check showed it still had water in the oil. It's a mystery to me where it came from. I had run the tractor hard the weekend before bushogging a field and it never got hot. there was plenty of antifreeze in the radiator and although we've had a few cold days, it was only down in the 20's for a couple of days. A friend suggested that maybe condensation was the culprit. I did notice some condensate on the outside of the engine block, but I don't know. Anybody got any ideas?

Wes, I had the same thing happen to me. My TO30 was outside all the time before I bought it and I noticed some gray puddles underneath it. Also, I saw a little when I checked the oil. I got it for a good price, so I thought maybe someday I'd get it fixed. I changed the oil as soon as I got it and kept it in the barn. After almost two years, there is no hint of any gray puddles anymore. The oil has no water or antifreeze in it and it runs great. My dad said it was condensation, and it sure has proved to be the case. Hope you don't have a cracked block.

Condensation is a frustrating problem that cannot be avoided. That's why mfgrs. recommend changing motor oil and transmission oil every 6 months regardless of mileage or hours recorded.

Thanks for the info guys. Mine is an outside tractor, at least until I get my barn built. I had an idea that might be the problem, but was afraid it was just wishful thinking on my part. Knowing that other Ferguson owners have had the same problem eases my worries a little. I think I'll change the oil one more time and see what happens.

If you're not completely sure it is condensation and change the oil again only to find out it's leaking in from the cooling system....your money could have been better spent. Spend a couple of bucks and buy a radiator stop-leak first....before changing the oil. Put it in, let it run for a half hour....then change the oil. L8R....Fred OH
