To some my e-mail address might seem presumtuous but it fits me: Slow and steady, in it for the long pull.
Anyhow I'm almost finished restoring a real rustbucket and need the specifics on 12v conversion with a 1 wire alternator. Wiring diagram, suggested wire sizes and the like.
This will complete a two year complete teardown and rebuild. Also source for hood medalions.
thanks

Can you refer me to a website that actually shows a diagram of a one wire alternator for a 1954(?) Industrial Ferguson tractor? Thanks!

a one wire alternator does not get any 'enable juice' from the ignition switch to turn on the alternator, so instead it relies on the residual magnetism in the rotor to do all of the 'get things started' work. this means you'll need more RPMs to ever start the alternator, and the voltage regulators are also notorious for having leakage current, meaning that they draw even when the tractor is off. remember that if you're gonna park it for weeks/months at a time. Good Luck

OK, the link will take you to an article on this site which gives some detail - there is a also a shed-load of info in the forum archives. That and a decent workshop manual should help. Always go for a gauge or two larger than you need if at all possible.

By hood ornament you mean the Ferguson badge, right? The cast one that is fitted to the front of the hood (bonnet) using two BA sized bolts, yes?

You can get these from The Old 20 Parts Co. here in the UK. Their number is +44 1332 792698, or you can email battelle@btinternet.com for more info.

From memory, someone on this board said that getting BA bolts in the US was not easy, so I'd suggest you get them at the same time.

BA was a size used here on a lot of electrical stuff mainly, but has now been pushed out of the way by filthy metric sizes.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help.
I'm greatful to all the old iron enthusiasts that will take the time to respond to such elementary questions as mine.

To clarify - by gauge or two larger, I mean thicker wire, able to carry more current.
