The Control Spring on my fergie is tight and cannot be adjusted. I am afraid to apply too much pressure when trying to turn the adjusting knob for fear of stripping/breaking the threaded screw inside the spring. Is there any way to loosen the spring without causing any damage to the inner nuts and bolts ?

I also have had this problem. When it is as tight as yours, you probably will need to do as Ray and Paul have counseled and remove the spring unit (four hard to remove bolts as I recall) or somehow get to the back side to hold it while you put leverage on it. That's what I did and along with heat and penetrating oil eventually mine came free. Otherwise you likely will break something and that will not make you happy. As you say, you are not plowing now anyway. Don't break it.

A few years ago, I tried to turn the frozen yoke on my TO-20. I didn't think that I was being too rough on it but I must have jerked it too hard. Anyway, my lift wouldn't work after this. I ended up dropping the pump and discovered that I broke a part, (1/16" rod) on the control valve. Luckily I had another pump to install. This pump came out of a tractor that had burned up and sat for 20 years, and it worked right away. The original pump was 50 years old and had never been out of the tractor before this. It is remarkable how well that pump stood up to the abuse over all of those years. It was at the point where it hammered a little when working. I intend to check the old pump out and re-do it for a spare some day when I get time. :o)

Search this board for answers from guys that experienced this and successfully loosened it. This is a common problem as there is seldom a need to readjust the master control spring. I noticed just yesterday I need to readjust mine. With a load on the 3pt lift, the spring is adjusted so you can rotate it by hand but eliminating all end play from the spring. Most all yokes are rusted onto the threaded shaft and must be coaxed loose with PB blaster or other such penetrant. Frequently heat must be applied also. The final procedure is to remove the entire top hyd's area casting that the seat is bolted to( follow procedure in shop manual exactly!), so you can hold the other end of the threaded rod to prevent breaking or bending something else.

Thanks Ray. It seems that penetrating oil heat and patience will do the job.

I got mine free only after repeated attempts; it was really tight. It finally moved after I clamped the outer end in a large vise with the entire lift cover up in the air, and rotated the lift cover. But I think I might have tried every evening or two for three weeks! Once I reassembled, I put antiseize on the threads but the thread pitch is so fine that when I undid it to take a look, there seemed to be no anti-seize left on the threads.
If I remember, I will try to rotate that piece every year or two just to keep it from seizing again. Jim W.
