We recently purchased an older ferguson tractor as a 2085 model . Don't know where ser. #'s or any other markings would be. Can anyone help.

The serial number of the tractor is stamped on the bottom of a plate in front of the steering wheel; it will start with TEA.
The serial number of the engine is on a flat surface just to the right of the right hand bolt holding the coil. It is often very hard to make out, either being covered in grease/rust or faintly stamped in the first place.
The 85 means 85mm bore, to differentiate it from the earlier 80 mm bore (known as the 2080). Being a 2085, its serial number should be above about TEA172000. If it is above TEA200000, it was originally 12 volts instead of 6.

I THINK I GOT SER. #'S BUT REALLY HARD TO MAKE OUT. THE TRACTOR ONE LOOKS LIKE TEA170669 AND ENGINE LOOKS LIKE 98912 B . DO THESE MAKE ANY SENSE.

Yes they make some sense, but if the tractor number is TEA170669 it should be a 2080. If it is TEA178669 though, that would make it a 2085.
It doesn't much matter though, which it is. Everything else is the same but the piston diameter.
If you go to the dealer looking for parts just say it's a TEA20. The "A" is critical as it means the engine was made by Standard Motor Company.
