Over the past 2 years or more the location of the compression spring and washer has been discussed and some say the spring and washer go above the oil filter and another view says it should go below. I am getting ready to do my annual oil and filter change. I'd like to get another poll as to which way it should go. I may have been doing it incorrectly in the past. Does the shop manual for this tractor give an authoritative answer? I'm not mechanically inclined, I just change oil, put in points and plugs, and I have drained and refilled the rear end oil. Thnaks Bill H.

I WAS WRONG. I thought that the filter works on the same principle as an old car of mine. I did some research and found that there are two types of filters on the Fergie ie. the vertical type and the inclined type. In the vertical type the spring is at the top and in the inclined type the spring is at the bottom. The spring is only there to keep the filter flush. In both types there is a pressure relief valve in the head of the casing tightened with a locknut. The oil flows from the outside of the filter to the inside. and the pressure relief valve comes into play when the filter blocks. I will scan the diagrams tomorrow morning and if you send me your email address i will send the diagrams of both filters to you.

I apologise for my mistake.

I have changed the oil filter on my TO 20 and have never found a compression spring or a washer. Since I do not have an original shop manual, this always slipped through...

Could I get a copy of those drawings too?

Thanks

Axel

IMO the spring on a TO 20 goes on top of the filter which is located in the bottom of the oil pan. I also beleive the filter is fed from the center pipe that the filter slides over. The oil supply is from the center main and is metered by a very small hole on the center pipe that passes thru the filter. This is just my opinion and I may be wrong. Is the inclined filter sounds a bit like the external filter on a TO 30?

The oil comes out of the centre shaft and passes through the oil filter and through to the engine. If the filter is blocked the filter should be pushed down so that the oil can bypass the filter and still lubricate the engine. This would mean that the spring should be at the bottom of the filter.

Kishore, 2 questions 1. The compression spring that goes at the bottom, should it hold the filter firmly against the top? I may nee to get new spring. 2. In looking at the shaft that goes through the filter approximately where should I look for the oil outlets? Thanks Bill H.
