i read that if you go to 12 volt use a small alternater because it will bog down the motor if you use to large of an alternater,is this true?also i have TO30 12 volt neg.ground with alternater do you need something to reduce the voltage to the coil? if so what? it still has the 6 volt starter.

Regarding your first question, no that is not true. The alternator only puts out whatever current is asked of it. It's like if you hooked up a very large battery to a flashlight, the battery wouldn't discharge faster due to its size.
Now if you hooked up a great big thumping stereo and a row of spotlights to your tractor, that would be more of a load on the alternator - and therefore bog down the motor that has to drive it. Regarding your second question, you can either use a resistor with your coil, or switch to a 12 volt coil. Someone here will know what value of resistor, and you can likely get it at your local auto parts store.
