Brake re-lining on a TE 20-85

I have finally admitted that I need to replace the brake linings on my TE - stopping is getting more difficult, and stopping straight is impossible!!

So now I have the new linings, and a bunch of rivets, and it should be relatively straight forward.

My questions are this:-

What is the best tool/method for getting the rivets on good and tight, with a neat finish? I've been wondering about using a modified G-clamp to squash the rivet into position.

Is it possible to use a high temperature Loctite to bond the lining to the shoe first and then rivet afterwards?

Oil leaks etc. have all been dealt with already, and I intend to gently chamfer the leading and trailing edges of the new shoes to reduce the wearing in period.

Thank you very much for your advice/suggestions, I have to find the time to do this now . . . .

I also asked around at the weekend, and have been given a couple of other ideas - combined with yours, this should get the job done. I'll post anything that seems like it works OK and does a good job.

The method I use is as follows. Saw the head off a 6 inch nail and place vertically in a vice with a couple of inches protruding. You are going to use the top of the nail as an anvil.
Offer the new lining to the shoe, and line up the rivet holes. Be very careful you don't break the lining as you may have to open it outwards to get a snug fit. Push a rivet through the lining and shoe with the head of the rivet to the lining. Place the head of the rivet on top of the nail and, using a rivet set punch over the open end of the rivet. You'll need three hands, but once you've done one or two you'll get the hang of it!

You set the rivits with an appropiate "Rivet set punch". 3 hand help too. It has been a long time sice I monkeyed with such a project. Glueing is not necessary . Main thing is all the holes line up from one end of she to the other end. I suppose if you had some doubts you could use small screws or bolts to keep everything aligned while you put the rivets in .
