What harm is done when some fool(read me) inadvertantly hooks up his positive ground, 6-volt battery backwards and runs it for a couple of days before figuring out that things ain't right? My bat. isn't getting a charge now and just wondering what I've broken. All comments welcome. Thanks.

I think the biggest harm you would do would be to the battery, and maybe also the coil? I don't see where anything else would be affected. But like James, I'm not an electrical whiz. Dell on the N Board has given lots of responses to these types of questions, and the answers should be the same for either type of tractor. You might search the archives over there.

I'm no electrical whizz, but looking at it logically, the voltage regulator has electromagnets in it which should work either way the voltage flows, and still close the connections accordingly.

Re-polarising a dynamo only takes a minute - so it shouldn't be the dynamo - tho it may have had a nasty surprise. You should be able to check for an output with a voltmeter. Does your battery still have any charge in it at all? What happens if you try to charge it (correctly connected) on a battery charger? Do you get any current thro' the charger then?

I'm just wondering if its the battery that's dead, and the cells inside it have warped - so you now have a dead battery that just won't accept any charge from anything.

Short answer is, I don't know. Stuck. But it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one to make simple mistakes - welcome to the club!
