I just bought a FERGUSON Tractor With this number on the left hand side of the engine block (with you sitting on the tractor) Z120A-600. I wa told it was a !950 modle TO20 Ferguson Tractor so i ordered that book for it. The book says this tractor, Ferguson, 1950, TO20 has a 6 volt system and a generator, but my tractor has a Ammeter on the left side on panel and it has a alternator and uses a 12 volt battery. Does anyone know if a Ferguson Tractor ever came out with a 12 volt system or has this tractor been converted over to a 12 volt system? Thanks for any help..E-Mail at: DMSRBS@aol.com

Roger, you may know, but if not, keep in mind that the book may show your tractor not only as being 6 volts but also as using a positive ground. With the 12 volt conversion and the alternator, it was converted to negative ground. You will have to be careful of using the manual for issues with the charging system.

Your tractor is a 12 volt conversion.

Is there any special reason people convert from 6 volts to 12 volts? Thanks...

12 volts spins the starter faster. Also, it is a little easier to jump start from a vehicle (until you learn how to do it right on the 6 volt system). Usually the owner is having starting problems, and converts to 12 volts to help solve those problems. 6 volt starting problems can always be fixed without conversion to 12 volts, but if the problem is in the generator and battery, etc., often people will go ahead and convert rather than rebuilding a 6 volt generator or buying a 6 volt battery.
