Ferguson uses six gallons of straight mineral oil, or GL-1 gear oil which has no additives, and is the same as mineral oil for this purpose. The GL-5 gear oil has some additives judged bad for the pump, etc. The Ford 134 lubricant is usually touted by the NH dealers and apparently does no harm and works fine, especially in very cold climates, since it is thinner than the GL-1. However, it is prone to leak past seals quicker than the GL-1 or mineral oil, and might not be as appropriate in warm weather since it is so thin. You can get the mineral oil from the MF dealers and you can get GL-1 from most tractor supply houses, but make sure it says GL-1. There is lots of info in the archives on this, and lots of opinions, but I think I have given you the consensus of this board. One last note, there are three drain holes, one fill hole, one reservoir, make sure you drain well, usually overnight, and reach in the holes for gunk, etc., as best you can. Hope that helps.

Regarding getting the gunk out - I have found it very helpful to pull out the pto shaft to get access to that area. It just takes undoing the four bolts and pulling it out as an assembly. Jim W

Right. But it will require a new gasket and does introduce an element of complexity usually not necessary in my opinion.

When I did it I happened to be dropping out the hydraulic pump for repair so had to pull the pto shaft anyway.
Extra work, agreed, but I was quite surprised at the quantity of sludge under the diff, and glad to have removed it. And sad to have pulled out chunks of metal that looked suspiciously like gear teeth... :(

Phil;
When you described the oil draining process, the words "usually overnight" have special meaning to me. I had just purchased the tractor and didn't have manuals yet. After draining from one plug on my T-35 for about 10mins or so, I figured the trickle/dripping signalled nearing the end of the draining. So, I put another 1Gal container the drain hole and left it for the night. Yikes! You guessed it- the container overflowed by about two gallons. Heck of a mess! But, I smile while shaking my head thinking about it.
BTW Good, comprehensive response to Pat.
