I have a '55 TO-35 that needs a new air filter. Any ideas where to find one ,or do I need to retro-fit something? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Actually the canister itself is in good condition. The actual filter material inside was useless and trashed. Is there something I could use to replace the filter material? Thanks for the help.

I trashed the oil cannister on my TO-20 a couple years back. It was easier and cheaper just to replace the whole thing at the end of the pipe. I went to a motorcycle shop and got one of those foam / oil air filters sized to fit on the pipe. Dirt bikes often use them for racing. The whole thing was about $18 and it freed up a lot of space under the hood to boot. I checked the specs on those filters and they are very highly regarded.

I replaced it in a Farmall Super C with Choregirl scour pads. Use the stainless or copper ones

I have a feeling that the air filter on the 35 was very similar to the one on the TE/TO 20 and 30 series - in other words an oil bath in the bottom, with some wire mesh to create turbulence in the air flow, trap large lumps of crud, and so on.

If this is the case, you should be able to replace it with a suitable quantity of wire mesh with a 1/4" (5mm) mesh size, scrunched up to fit in the canister - high tech engineering, Huh? I think you need about a 2 1/2" to 3" deep 'filter', of well squashed mesh.

I'm puzzled the old filter is trashed - usually you can rinse them out in kerosene/paraffin and use them again - perhaps what you have in there is not what should be in there? Or maybe the old mesh has rusted away?

Do you need the whole canister? If so, you'll need to go to farm auctions, tractor junkyards, and stuff like that to find a used one. They aren't sold new by dealers anymore. You could also try aftermarket places like Bareco. Or you could go modern by measuring the carb inlet and then look at Jeg's or Summit performance car parts. They sell air filters for smaller engines like motorbikes. Or try a motorbike shop.
