12V Electrical Question on TO30

Hey guys,

Been reading the board for a while, and trying to tune-up my TO-30. I have only owned it for a couple of years now, and it has run very well in that time. But, it seems to be down a little on power, so I thought it might need some TLC.

Anyway, I was looking at the ignition system as an area to make some improvements. I have a 12 volt battery, but I noticed yesterday that the coil says 6 volts. Is this possible? Will a 6 volt coil work on a 12 volt system? Also, would it be worth putting on an aftermarket 12 volt coil? Something with a little more juice than the stock coil.

One last thing.... has anyone used the electronic ignition conversion to eliminate the points and ballast resistor. Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Shane

I got tired of filing points and failed condensor, etc. Bought the electronic ignition kit for my TO-30. It was easy to install and I have been very satisfied with my tractors performance. It cranks faster and runs great. I ordered it from Geneseeproducts.com. They are nice folk, knowledgeable and very helpful. Cost around $100. I don't think the electronic ignition lets you do away with your ballast resistor, though. That has more to do with your coil.

When I bought my '53 TO-30 about 2 years ago it was already converted to 12-v system. after cutting 7.5 ac of grass for 2 years it was time for a heavy duty tune up. Two months ago I put in new plugs, plug wires, rotor, cap, Pertronix Ignitor and a 12-v high output coil. I have also put in new battery and rebuilt starter. Before all these new parts it would take 5 to 8 seconds to start the engine; now takes only 2 to 3 seconds. It requires less choke as well. I think if you don't mind spending 80 to 100 dollars its worth it. The plugs & oil should stay cleaner due to higher voltage at spark plugs; more efficient combustion & less unburn blow by...my 2 c's worth.

I have a 6 volt coil on my TO-20 with a 2 OHM ballast resistor and have had no problems at all.

I have had good luck with the 12 volt coil with internal resistor.
