looking for advice based on the following observations
1) position control does not always lift to the same height
2) sometimes the lift shutters
3) always goes up when the position lever moved forward to the "slow-fast" region but does not respond to the draft lever at all
4) I assume the "slow-fast" position is for draft control operation.
5) last problem- the tractors new to me (I'm new to it).
Thanks Roger

Sounds like the control linkage requires resetting internally, but you could see if the rocker for the top link is siezed or has too much end play in it, that could give similar results. there should be no end float in the spring and you should be just able to turn it when you have a Ferguson 2 furrow plough mounted on the tractor. If all this fails let me know and I will tell you in more detail how to reset the linkage internally.
The position control lever is used for lifting and lowering of the three point linkage, when you use the draft contol lever that is moved to the depth you wish to work and and the knob locked up, you then have a range of movement for adjustment as you travel along if required. While you are in draft control, the position control lever should now be in the "fast/slow response" section of the quadrant, the lever should be set as slow as possible but fast enough to allow the implement to follow the ground contours, dont run it on fast all the time as you dont get full weight transfer and your hydraulic pump is continually under load which is unecessary, When moving forward with an implement requiring depth control, if you have the controls set correctly and you put your hand on the short lift arms under the seat you will feel the hydraulics shudder as it lifts the implement to maintain depth, it should not be doing this continually that would be a sign that you have too much fast response on the lever, so slow it down. If the Position control lever starts to lift the implement when its in the slow response range, the lever stop screw needs adjusting, To do this you move the position control lever to the lower position then as the implement starts to rise, lift the lever till it neither lifts not lowers and at that point you move the stop screw so the lever will not go lower than that any longer. The stop screw is the small nut and bolt with a spacer through the quadrant in a small slot at the lower end of the lever range, not the one in the same slot as the lever with a big hand nut, that one is used when you are in position control and you need to go back to same height each time, just lock in up and the lever will go to same place every time. Do not use the draft control lever for lifting the 3 point linkage, only the position control lever should be used for that. The draft lever is also used for supplying hydraulic power to an external ram or rams (trailer or loader) but you should not leave the lever in the fully raised postion as the hydraulics will be constantly pumping and blowing the relief valve, set the lever so that when the loader or trailer starts lifting, if you put the draft lever to the guide knob it will neither lift not lower, then all you need to do is move the draft lever within the small range of adjustment to lift and lower and hold. While you are using the the Draft lever for external power the Position control lever should be on the FAST sector marks, to allow for quick lowering. Hope you can understand all this, if you have any queries please dont hestiate to ask. Its a wonderful hydraulic system but if anyone tries to explain the correct way to work it it might as well be in Chinese, so many people even now dont known the correct operation of this system and yet its so simple once explained.
