On the Standard engine, there was a timing hole on the left side flange of the cylinder block, just below the starter, use a thin piece of rod to go through the hole into the flywheel, this is TDC firing number 1, so you can easily get it from there. If your block doesnt have the hole in (dont see why not tho) if you remove the rocker cover from the engine and turn it over till valves 7 and 8 on number 4 cylinder are just rocking at the same time, that is TDC firing number 1. On both timing sprockets there are scribe lines that should point to each other to ensure the timing is correct. The only guide on the skew gear on the distributor drive is the centre piece, just see that this lines up with the distributor when distributor is firing number one, you may have to pull it out and move it round a tooth to match the distributor.Hope that answers your question. Let me know if you need more.

Thanks again John I just spent the day screwing with it , I think I got it close it started first crank and ran with out haveing to pull the choke to keep it running I just rebuilt this engin so the big test is to see how well I did .Oil pressure was good it stayed at 65 lbs @ idel when warm "not shure about the gauge" There is a slight pop some times out of the breather intake could this be a problem with old points ? but other than that it has lots of power and sounds good

If you are sure about the valve clearances, just check the plugs, you could have a duff one there but as you say it could be the points, maybe condenser, even coil.....sorry about that but there is plenty to look at, Oil pressure sounds good, ok maybe gauge could be out, pressure on this engine should be 40 to 60psi when hot. Points should be .012" original part number was Lucas 407050...Sounds all good though. Regards John

It makes it much easier to tell you how to do things if you tell us what you are working on, I.E what model of tractor and what engine.
