My Ferguson T0 30 will lift implements, but the hydraulics make a "knocking" noise while heavier implements are raised and transported. It will not hold implements up at a constant height. The hydraulic fluid reservoir is filled correctly. What might be the problem(s) and is this something a novice mechanic can handle or should I take it a professional?

Just a thought while I was looking again at this, how heavy are we talking when you say heavy?...how long does it take to drop to the ground when you turn the engine off. It could be that its knocking because of the weight (its a piston type pump)and could be actually nothing wrong with it. By "not holding at a constant height" are you thinking that it should be like an MF35 and is fitted with position control? If you are, well it isn't but you can get a kit to do that..let us know please the outcome.

You could also try this site, which has some excellent animated pics of how the hydraulics work, and an explanation in text.

This could be just the metal rings on the lift cylinder are worn out and need to be replaced. Get a service manual and follow the directions for servicing it is fairly straight forward. You might want someone to help you lift the unit off the tractor though. Don't forget to open the side covers and remove the valve guide. I didn't and had to replace mine.

ps get new gaskets for the top and side covers.

Remove the right hand round cover plate (the one with the distick in it) and raise the hydraulics try to see if there is any oil leaking from the top lift cylinder, (you may need a torch and lie underneath to see in properley)KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUT while its running though, if there is no oil leaking from the top end see if the oil is swirling around in the bottom around the pump, the leak could be there, but really oil leaks wont make the pump knock, its either trying to lift something too heavy or something is broken. This is a site that will give you more info on troubleshooting your system, if you dont have any success sorting it, come back again.
