Hello,
We bought a guest ranch recently, and with it a ferguson tractor....

We believe it is a TO20,
serial number is 10132. So I assume it was a 1948 model.

We are having trouble with the starter, the current stater's bolt config is correct, but the nose does not fully engage the flywheel, it is about 3/8 inch shy of proper engagement.

I am wondering if I can salvage this starter, and get a longer nose, or do I need a new starter?

Thanks in advance all.

Karl, Are you sure that the lack of engagement is not due to the ring gear coming off the flywheel? Take a look in the hole that the starter goes into and make sure that the ring gear is on the flywheel.I had a similar problem with my TO-30 and the starter could not engage the ring gear to drive the flywheel. Ferguson made a design change to the flywheel to prevent this problem from occuring. The early model flywheel had a ring gear sweated on and the starter has a tendency to push it off the flywheel over time. The modified flywheel has a small lip on it at the rear which does not allow the starter to push the ring off. Some people weld the old ring gear on the flywheel but that was done to mine and it came off anyway. The Ferguson manual says you need to get a different flywheel and that's what I did and I've had no problems. It isn't a tough job to split this tractor and replace the flywheel.
Hope this helps.
