Just wanted to say thanks for the input and explanation on ammeters - finally got round to reading it carefully with pen and paper to hand, and it makes sense (scarily).

So the idea is that if your meter FSD value is say 6V, and your dynamo can chuck out 30A (if only) then your R(shunt) must be 0.2 Ohm for meter FSD at full charge - any less current, and the displayed V is proportionally less. Neat :)

This also means that if your ammeter dies, then you can measure the value of the shunt resistor, and work out what the FSD of the meter should be to give an appropriate scale - and replace it with one 'off the shelf'.

I like this - I think the light just went on.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the kind words, James. I am glad I could of help. When I first started fooling with electricity/electronic back in the late '60 when I was a little kid, I saved every penny from my lunch money and bought a Sanwa (Japanese) meter for about $5. I wanted to find out how it works, so I took it apart. I found out how it works & I also found out I couldn't put it back together and make it work as before. Needless to say it put a lasting impression on me not to mention MaMa's 'lesson' left on my buns.....
