'53 TO-30 Surges Under Small Load - Governor?

I've been out mowing my pasture with my TO-30 and a problem has developed suddenly: The tractor starts, idles, and runs well. When I'm mowing and hit a spot where I put a load on the tractor it occasionally (but not always) races the engine.... A LOT! I've peeked at the governor linkages and all seems free. What's perplexing is that it was fine one evening and the next day this started. I have the owner's manual and governor adjustment instructions, but don't want to mess with it if there's something obvious I'm missing. Thoughts?

I have an old MF50. It has a dampener on the governor. Small bolt in the front of the block. I don't know much about it, but maybe some one else will. I've been told that you can adjust out the very problem you're having. (That's in the Z134 engine, don't know a thing about the Z129)

two areas to look at are the cork friction disk on the trottle shaft above your right knee as you sit on the tractor ,this was causing mine to race and while i had the retainer spring loose i found the shaft binding in the front pivot point by the governor spring, just a drop of oil fixed it up, good luck.

Glen: Your governor should be trying to hold the engine rpm constant (nearly constant as there is some speed droop, but not much)as the load varies at a fixed throttle lever position. If the engine is racing (i.e. speeding up with a large change in rpm) when you hit a spot that increses the load, it sounds like maybe your clutch is slipping. I'm assuming that your governor/throttle linkage is all hooked up and functioning properly. Hope this helps.

Jerry,

Thanks for the response. I don't think it is the clutch as when the engine speed increases so does the ground speed - it puts me back in the seat (well, as much as a TO-30 can put you back in the seat..... lol) and the RPMs go to a level that I'm sure is higher than 2200 - or whatever the max rpm is for this tractor. Still perplexed with 5 acres left to mow.

Glen:
Sounds like something is sticking in the governor or the throttle linkage then. Have you tried watching the throttle rod reaction when you accelerate from idle up to some high power setting with the machine in neutral? Or better yet have somebody drive it slowly in first gear and suddenly acclerate the engine. Look at how the throttle lever from the governor to the carburetor reacts. (Be careful not to get run over while your concentrating on the throttle rod!)It should be smooth and positive. If you think you're exceeding max rpm (2200 rpm) get a tach to check it and find out. You may need to adjust the linkage. Hope this helps.

If this has suddenly started and the engine is exceeding the 2200rpm by a large amount, it is possible that it is the governor itself . What happens is that the weights break off or one end of a weight breaks away and it wont allow the governor to control correctly by causing it to stick, the engine therefore can rev freely. You may hear a rattling sound from the timing cover.
