Problem: Tractor has ran pretty good for the last five years. Now after starting the tractor and running it for about 10 minutes it starts surging, then eventually it stops running. I can then start it back up and it will run and start surging again and stop in a few minutes. It acts the same whether idling or under a load. I have replaced the gas tank, coil, points, condenser, and had the carburetor rebuilt and it still does the same thing.

I have a TE20 that would do the same thing, except it would run about 15 min. It turned out to be retarded timing on the distributor. As it ran, it would blow a lot of smoke out of the crankcase vent. the engine would surge and it didn't have much power. Finally it would stall and wouldn't restart for about 20 min. Put a timing light on plug no. 1 and check the timing.

I'm going to try all the options mentioned. I tried the "starter fluid" suggestion and it actually stopped the tractor from stalling out for a few seconds. But if it's the fuel system, why would it run for over 10 minutes before surging? The only thing left in the fuel system is the carburetor that I can think of. Gas tank, fuel bowl, fuel filter, fuel line have all been replaced. I eliminated the oil bath air-filter by disconnecting it. The carburetor was rebuilt (not by me) but I wonder if the float is sinking? Will have to take that off and look more closely.

I THINK THE COIL IS OVER HEATING WHICH CAUSEING FUEL TO PAST THREW RINGS INTO THE CRANKCASE AS THE COIL GET HOT FROM IT USE IT ABILITY TO SPARK THAT MEANS THAT THE COIL IS WORE OUT OR IT HAS LOSS IT OIL FILL TO KEEP IT COOL DURING OPPERATION

MY DAD HAS A TO30 HE HAD PROBLEM WITH HIS TRACTOR HE HAD SETIMINT IN HIS TANK IT ALSO HAD A SIMULAR PROLBEM BUT IT WOULD BE MOSTLY ON LONG TRIP FROM MORE 1 OR 2 MILES SO WE BLEW AIR INTO TANK AND IT WAS OK FOR AWILE. IT ALSO COULD HAVE WATER IN CARB BUT YOU SOULD HAVE SEEN IT IN STAINER BOWL

Remember guys that the coil is brand new (just replaced), the gas tank and sediment bowl are brand new, and the gas is fresh.

The timing setting is definitely something to check, but normally that would happen hot or cold I would think. Nevertheless, it's a possibility. I believe, however, you are on the right track to doublecheck the carb, especially since spraying starter fluid made it run better. I know it was rebuilt, but it could still be the prob. New coils sometimes are bad right out of the box, but not often. I'm betting on the carb.

THERE IS NOT TOO MUCH THING LEFT. BUT IF THE TRACTOR HAS BEEN CHANGE OVER TO 12 VOLT. YOU MAY NOT HAVE CHANGE OVER TO A 12 VOLT CONDENCER. IT MAY HEATING UP WHICH CAUSEES THE SPARK TO GET WEAK, AND THAT WHY IT WILL RUN FOR WHILE ON STARTING FUILD. THEN WHEN THE CONDENCER COOL THE THACTOR CAN BE RESTART.

Boy this sounds familiar. I'd swear I saw this problem on this forum recently. Go through all the messages on this forum and then check the archives. Good Luck!

Philip:
After it stops, can you tell whether it quit because of fuel starvation or lack of spark?
Do you have a ballast resitor on the ignition system? If so, have you checked that for continuity before you start up and after it quits? Are you sure about the float setting?
Make sure your manifold is tight and that the carburetor has a gasket between it and the intake manifold and they are torqued down properly. When you replaced the tank did you blow out all the fuel lines? I have a '54 TO-30 with a broken baffle plate in the tank that keeps all the crud stirred up and I occaisionally get a non-fuel feed situation, but with a new tank, I can't see how that could be your problem. this is a starange one. Keep us posted, please.

Now that's a good puzzler. When you replaced the tank, etc., I assume you checked and cleaned the sediment bowl and the gas line and all the filters. Does it do it with the air cleaner assembly unhooked? Could the air cleaner be blocked? Only other thing I can think of is the governor or governor linkage. Others might have more ideas. This is a good one, considering you have done most of the things to look for.

Yes I also replaced the fuel bowl (including filter), fuel line, cleaned out the air filter with kerosene & replaced the oil in the air filter, and removed the old in-line fuel filter that was in the carburetor inlet. I put the same oil in the air filter that is in the tractor. The governor linkage does not appear to be in a bind anywhere.

Still sounds like a fuel problem, see if it will keep running on starting fluid when it starts to die. If it does or doesn`t you have proved it or disproved it. lol kjm
