Cant really understand why you would want to fit an 8volt???? battery on a 6volt system. On the face of it I would say if you want the tractor to continue working without problems...NO

many people have replaced 6 volt battery with a 8 volt battery , even on ford tractors. Why ?

Sorry but I have never even heard of it before, I can imagine it will give the electrics just that bit more pep if you like 6volt system always tended to be sluggish

John your right. over here that was a common practice. more cold cranking amps in a 8volt. I didn't know you could get an 8 volt anymore. to answer the professor question i would say it,s a waste of money,I know theres a lot of talk here about 12 volt converisons, but according to my alt/starter repair shop(and it,s a good one) just put a 12 volt in, no modification, i did and worked good.might be hard on lights. I think the only other thing i replaced was a $30 coil.

8 volt battery in u.s. can be purchased from NAPA auto parts or Interstate batteries Co. these are 2 sources. i have been told 8 v. will crank faster
don't have to change coil, and you can adjust the third brush on generator if needed to get more v. output thanks for all the help

Hi Larry, Thanx for that...8volts though???? lol
have heard of them doing what you say before and it seemed to work out ok unless they had a poor starting engine and it burnt the starter motor out, but if it worked ok it would save a few bucks. Over here we have had 12volt Fergies since 1951 so really very few were ever converted, but I can understand why they did it.

I have an 8 volt on my TO20 and haven't had any problems. My headlights aren't working, so don't know if the 8 volt would affect those or not.

It probably wouldn't make any differene I suppose, the bulbs may need changing a little more often but I think they may be brighter though. It was the 8volt battery that intrigued me, never heard of anything like that, but I know that in US they had a lot of 6volt systems on cars and trucks too so maybe that idea just gave the systems a little more pep when they needed it. Wonder why they didnt introduce 12volts on the tractors till quite late though, like almost 5 years after UK it cant have been cost as I would think it would cost just as much or very little more.
