I hope someone out there can help once again. I am in the process of overhauling an old sickle mower. I have repaired the worn out wear plates that go behind the knife back and the blades now run close to the bottom surface of the guards but there is a huge gap (2-3 mm) between the blade and the clips. Is this just wear? Is it repairable other than by buying new clips? If I do have to buy new clips, where (in UK) can I get them.

Many thanks in advance,

Hi Pete, The method you can use to adjust the knife clips is very simple, if you dont have the correct shims to do it or there aren't any shims in so the clearance is too great, just hit the clips with a hammer they wont break and it will close up, even with shims you had to do it sometimes to get it right clearance. If you overdo it and the clearance is too small, just pack something underneath untill you get it right.New clips would be better if you can get hold of some, just make sure your knife clips push the knife as far forward as it will go without excessive binding, and use plenty of oil on it to start with till it beds in.
