Starter drag?

My starter on my 1951 model TO-20 does not release after the engine starts, which causes my engine to die. I took off the starter and took it to a auto electric repair shop and he said the starter looked fine to him, and that I should be looking for a problem with the electric supplied to the starter, either from the ignition or from a problem with the starter switch. Does this sound possible to anyone? When I took the starter off, the starter assembly was extended, but when I took it to the repair place, they told me that was normal, and it would go back when the motor started, and he said he could get it back by spinning it with a wire brush (which he did). I need to know if I should be ordering a new starter switch, ignition switch, or just wait for him to finish going over the starter?

Probbly low voltage. You did'nt say 6 or 12 volt. 6 volt draws more amperage. You need large cables. Pretty much, the larger the better. Less resistance to flow. Good charge on the battery is really important. Make sure all connections are clean, and that you have a fully charged battery.

Take a good look at your ring gear if it is burred or damaged teeth it can hold the starter gear from returning to the ready poistion just a thought
