To all. Good day

My question is . Is there a replacement split seal that can be installed in place of the existing seals on the steering arms on my TEA 20?

With all the new technologies out there , there must be a split chevron seal that you can cut and glued to replace the originals without pulling the whole steering box apart. Help would be appreciated.

Thx in advance.

Never seen a seal like you require listed anywhere. However I do know a few guys who have used a fluid type grease instead of oil in the the steering box and it works just fine with no leaks. Just make sure its thick but fluid though.

Hi Al. I was fed up with steering arm seals leaking all the time so I devised a way to use heavy grease instead of oil. But it does require a complete tear-down of the steering gear box.

I dirlled a 1/16" dia. hole through the center of one of the steering arm shafts. Good thing you only have to drill one side 'cause it's a tough job. In the elbow of the shaft I drilled and tapped a hole to fit a grease fitting. This grease port will feed grease all the way into the center bearing where the right and left steering arm shafts come together. That takes care of the inner bearing.

On the outside of the grar box, on top of the right and left bearings I drilled a 1/16" dia. hole into the outboard bearings. Of course the steering shafts were not in place when I drilled these. I put a grease fitting into each of the two outboard bearings. Now I have three grease fittings to lube my steering arms.

To lube the quad gears inside I gave each one a liberal coating of molly-lube at the time of assembly. I has been my experience that molly-lube will last for many years and mine is proof that it works very well.

Now I have a completely empty gear box (emply of oil) but a well lubricated steering system.

I recomment this highly.

Thx for the insight Boogity.

I checked with my bearing and seal supplier today and he has advise me that I just have to bring in OD and ID plus depth of seal and he can supply rubber seal that comes in the bulk and you cut to length, join with a special glue and press back into where the original leather seal fit. Just won't have the metal case on it. This would still allow one to keep the oil as a lube and keep the unit as close to original as possible. I am a restorer and when it comes to the scrutiny of show people they have a telescope eye.

Thx. again.

When you do get this rubber material and try it out, will you please let us know its brand and how it seems to work? I've seen a lot of leaking steering seals on Ferguson TOs because its such a pain in the butt to change them, but I bet a lot of folks would have a go at the fix you describe in order to be able to quit wiping the goo off the side of the tractor.

Thanks,

Steve in Delaware

I think you will never have a problem with your steering arms again!
I wish my tractor ran as well as your steering arms will forever be lubricated.
