1952 TO-30 - Rust in gas tank

There seems to be a fair amount of rust and particles clinging to the inside of the gas tank. No obvious deterioration of the structure though. The previous owner removed the tank and shook it with bb's, which removed a bunch, but not all.

Any suggestions?

Brian, I had problems with a tank sealer called Kreme-Koat or something similar, applied in a motorcycle tank. it was OK for a couple of years, then came loose from the tank wall and hung like a curtain in the gas. Sold the bike, so I don't know how the new owner solved this problem. On my TE-20, i installed an inline filter(replace annually!) to prevent the collection of rust dust in the float bowl, which pretty much chokes off the gas supply. This is a problem which demands a working, permanent solution. Good luck!

The coatings apparently work pretty well, although I don't have personal experience with that. The see-thru auto filter, if you look at it periodically and change it when it begins to get stuff in it, might be ok. However, the only good way to hook them up is downstream of the sediment bowl and the rust could clog up in the line before it gets to the sediment bowl. Even if you go the route of an inline filter, I would take the tank off again and either keep trying to clean it, or have it coated.

You can spend money getting it cleaned and I think have a coating applied to the inside. Would probably be better than new.

Or you can put an automotive style fuel filter in the line from tank to carb (assuming all the tractor has now is a sediment bowl) and forget about it.

Sparex do a new fuel tank for the TE20 which could also fit the TO30...part # S42413 check it out with your local dealer.

I traded for a TO-30 which had been inoperative for several years. I gave it to my son and rebuilt it from end to end (with a Zane Thang). It gave problems with rust in the fuel tank. I put a couple of quarts of small gravel in the fuel tank, probably rolled it around for thirty minutes total, shook the gravel out, rinsed the tank until nothing else came out, let it air out in the hot sun and have had no further problems.
