Help!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! I was hauling wood yesterday and while I was loading the trailer, the tractor just sputtered and shut down. I tried to start it and all it would do is just roll over and blow air back thru the oil bath air filter, By the way it never ever did that before. There is lots of gas to the carb. Could it be a timing chain?? Would or could the tractor roll over with a broken timing chain?? Remember Im a complete rookie here. Its a 1952 TEA-20. I cleaned out the air filer and put in new oil, still the same problem when trying to start it, It would just pop air back out the top, any help would be great. I will be away from the office for 2 weeks starting today, So I may not get to check the replys right away. Thanks in advance

Unusual for a timing chain to break, not impossible though, usually you can hear them rattling for a while. To check if it is broken check if the distributor turns when you crank the engine, if the rotor turns the chain is ok

Having said that though, I did just replace a broken timing chain on one of mine. I bought the tractor with the chain already broken so don't know what kind of warning it gave, but it did go through the cover when it broke.
Lots of fun replacing - step one, remove front axle....

Hi Jim, Was it just the chain broken or was there a governor weight off too, that was what usually caused the chain to break, but I have seen them with the engine locked solid with a weight between the chain and the crank sprocket.Usually too, its a weight that goes through the timing case. As you say though good fun getting to them.

You are absolutely right, not one but two governor weights were broken off. I had forgotten that until you mentioned it. I replaced the whole "bell and weight" assembly, chain, and cover, and all is well now.
Hey Barry, any news yet? Hope it's something simple like crud in the fuel line.
