Many use 40 wt/ mineral oil in winter with no harm. Be sure to change back to 90wt next spring though.

i live in canada so i don,t know if you can get this stiff where you are but, i use durtran tractor and tranmission hydrulic oil, i use it year round and don,t have any problems, i have used it for years, i have checked it in comparison to the recommended 80/90 mineral oil meets or exceeds everything only one draw back i guess would be the cost i paid this year with taxes 63 bucks for all i needed, but if you can keep out the moisture it last s a long time, the inside of my tractor was nice an clean no sludge build, works great, petrocan makes this do a search on it.when it gets really cold minus 20 or more i don,t run the old girl anyways .

I live in Western Montana and yesterday I went out at 3F, started my tractor and the transmission/hydraulic oil was so cold that I couldn't take my foot of the clutch without killing the engine. After about 10 minutes of warming up, I was able to release the clutch and drive off. The lift was slow, but after driving around for about 5 minutes, it was fine. It's just something you have to learnto live with.

Hi James
My dad always put 1 quart of diesel fuel in the tranny for the winter no it won't hurt. This will also help with sticky valves this tip is from a 83 year old ferguson dealer. Good luck Scott

Have you thought about a magnetic oil pan heater on the transmission sump area. Works great for engines in cold weather.

You can get the magnetic heaters from Wolverine products. Do a search on the net.

I remember some of the old operators manuals, sugesting that a quart of kerosine be added in winter to thin the oil. What would it hurt? I dont know.

This is probably OK if you change your oil in the spring. Do it too many years in a row and you'll have a lot of kerosene in the system.
