Morning everyone, Well here is my situation. I was hauling wood about 3 weeks ago. I let the tractor idle while I loaded the trailer. All of a sudden the tractor just quit. When it quit it didnt stop like it normally did. It kind of sputured. I tried to start it right back up, and noticed that it was rolling over very easily. I took off the distributor cap and checked it out, Looked ok. I then tried to roll the tractor over again and noticed that the shaft that the rotor sits on wasnt turning. This is when I thought it could be a broken timing chain.( Could this be correct? ) Im a rookie when it comes to these tractor and this problem is far behond my capabilities. Does this shaft go all the way down into the tractor or could it be as simple as a pin missing somewhere up nere the top of the shaft. The tractor mechanic that I called said that we would look at it and its been almost 2 weeks and he wont return my calls. So there she sits just waiting to be played with. Any suggestions or advise would be great. Is this a problem that I could fix myself?? Thanks in advance,,, Barry

It is a chain that drives the camshaft on a Standard engine and a governor weight will have come off and jammed the chain and broken it..you will need a governor weight assy and maybe a mushroom out of the centre of the governor and a chain and a timing cover gasket and change the timing cover oil seal while you have it off. not a big job really.....2 hours if you know what you are doing..or 4 if you dont. The sprockets on the chain are marked with scribe lines so it easy enough to get it timed up right. Before you order any parts just make sure you havent damaged any sprocket teeth too badly, you can get new ones if you need them.

Thanks everyone , your in-put has been great. I still think Im going to try and get it to a mechanic. I found out yesterday that my freind who has an old case tractor met this retired farmer who had just moved into the area. He loves to work on these old tractors. Its being towed up there this morning and we are going at it tonight. My local Massey Ferguson dealer is open till 9 pm, so any parts that I may need wont be a problem. Stay tuned for the up-date on what was broken and how bad it was,, Thanks again---- Barry

It is a chain; I had to replace mine too.

Here is a picture, although the engine is upside down on a stand.

Piece of cake. Like said, its a good 4 hour job, but don't be afraid of it. Good luck, and have fun....Don't you hate people who won't return calls? Theyr'e the reason I have a wood working shop and a to20 tractor. It's hard to find good help.

Well to answer your last question first, you can fix anything yourself; you just need the courage.
As a preliminary step you can remove the gas tank and the rocker cover. Then if you crank over the engine you will see if the rocker arms are operating; if not then your camshaft is not rotating and it's your timing chain.
Here is another check you can do - the other end of the distributor shaft runs the oil pump. If you crank the engine and do get oil pressure, then the timing chain is not broken. There is a Woodruff key that keeps the shaft engaged with the distributor but I think the chances of it being broken are extremely remote. In other words I bet it's your timing chain. The difficult part is going to be that you need to remove the front wheels and axle to get at the timing cover. It would be much nicer if you could somehow drag the tractor back home to work on it. Doing this job in the field (in the rain, in the snow...) will NOT be enjoyable. I have been doing it in my driveway and I still wish it had been in the garage (closer to tools and coffee (or beer IF you prefer) and out of the weather).
So I would say step one, no matter what approach you are going to take, is get it home.
Jim W.
