I recently bought a TE20 and have not yet figured out what the designation S is on the transmission cover plate. It is upper right position opposite reverse on the four speed. Also, the manual I bought shows no starter relay (which I have)and no button starter switch (which I also have). Were these initially on the TE20s or have they been added.?

Someone has cut out the safety switch that was operated by the gear lever in the "S" position. If you look on top of the clutch housing directly under the battery you will see the switch with 2 terminals. You cant start the tractor in gear and get run over if you have this in use.

To John (UK) Thanks for the explaination John. Seems perfectly logical when I consider there has been a starter switch and relay installed that were not original. I have never before learned of such a starting set-up. Ill bet it worked good when new. (I checked out the switch and it is no good so it is no wonder it is re-wired) A big thanks to the others who also answered my question. Bill

You can still buy that switch, its available from Sparex part # S42538..It is possible that it may require adjusting, the mounting holes on that switch are elongated for this purpose, slacken the four screws off and move it forward to increase the pressure on the switch, if that doesnt work you could try to take the switch apart and clean the contacts, Just be carefull you dont drop the operating rod into the clutch housing or you will have to fish for it, (tie a piece of twine to it before you remove the pin)If that also fails, replace thge switch. The origin of that switch is, the meeting of Henry Ford with Harry Ferguson and Henry Ford nearly got run over by someone starting the tractor in gear, so they quickly made the safety starter switch, so be warned...lol

Hi the S is for Starter. The Starter motor used to be operated via a switch in the top of the gearbox housing which was tiggered by pushing the gearstick into S. This was a kind of safety feature which prevents you from starting the tractor in gear.
