TEA-20 Quit Running-Long Post

My TEA-20 has given up the ghost, methinks. Since I bought her, 2 years ago, she's only run strong on 3 cylinders, blown oil smoke out of the breather cap by the sky-full (but no smoke from the exhaust), leaked like a sieve from the rear main seal, rods & valves are playing some Caribbean bongo beat only jazz players can keep time to, and has she no brakes. The front spindles are shot and the block is cracked(leaks antifreeze from the side but not into the oil).

Well, I made a diaper out of a milk carton so the oil wouldn't leak everywhere (1 qt/hour). I replaced her Lucas starter (US$367), water pump, converted to 12v neg. grd., electronic ignition, new bearings and seals on rear axles to curb the oil bath on the brakes shoes I had custom made. (still no brakes, oil everywhere)

I have used her like a mule. I can stop better than most people with brakes because I use the clutch and whatever gear is going in the opposite direction that I can jam it into! Sometimes I use the back blade, sometimes I use the front loader.

She's never overheated or run low on oil. Great oil pressure when cold to warm. She has a two-stage transmission but only had power to run in the low range in 1st or 2nd. (I live on a mountain and she's heavy with liquid filled tires and loader and blade)

I used the front loader and back blade in October to dig out and clear a space for my neighbor's new garage and parking area. And limped up our mountain to home on very, very low power. Oil pressure was at less than 10psi. I barely made it to her space at what seemed like 2 cylinders firing and plenty of blow-by, cough, cough.

Now I can't start her. I can get one cylinder to fire but it's not enough to actually start the engine and run on its own power when I quit the starter.

I give you all this background because I would like to get her running again as I've bought a TO-30 and want to use the 20 for the awful jobs she's used to, like lifting and moving 1 ton rocks on my property.

I don't mind lots of suggestions or even simple sounding fixes. If I don't have to rebuild the engine right now I really don't want to. That's for summer of '05.

go to fofh.co.uk and look for UK suppliers. It will tell you what is available and you can work out what is economical to have shipped over.

Parts to rebuild your TE-A-20 are still readaly available in the U.K. But if an £80 lucas starter is over $300 then either boats have got very expensive or someone is making a great deal of profit at your expense.

That was the cheapest I could find, even on this site.

You could just rebuild the head for now; not too hard or expensive and will probably get you back a lot of performance. Sounds like valve guides, head gasket, valve seats, and maybe a valve or two are in order - and you wouldn't have to split the tractor.
My two cents.

I was hoping not to get into this but I will if I have to. I see from your site that the early TR engines share most parts. I've rebuilt quite a few British sports cars in the past and have used The Roadster Factory for my TR6s and 250s. Do you think they'll have a head kit?

Thanks much, Jim.

The head gasket and rocker cover gasket will work but that's about it. The heads are entirely different in their design so the manifold gaskets, the valves, and the valves spring are different. I actually tried TRF for parts and while they had some familiarity with the fact that the TEA was similar to the 4 cylinder TR series they couldn't help me with parts.
If you get in to the bottom end you'll have better luck with parts crossing over.
I took my TEA head to the local UAP here and they were able to fix it up. I didn't need valves but they got me springs for about $8 Cdn each.

Not answering for jim, but...if you have a good automotive machine shop near by, they will do all of the reasearch for you. Just tell them you want the seats ground near the center of the valve, and you want GM type umbrella seals. However, it sounds like you may have problems with the rings since rhere was "blow by". In that case a TR2 head might be a match. Sorry, but I'm not sure. Actually my machinist matched up my valves and seats from a GM from the 50S or 60S and they worked well in my Triumph TR4 race car. I feelsure you can match up pistons and liners with a TR.

What's a UAP? I'll probably need valves.

It's a NAPA. Maybe UAP was a Canadian outfit that got sucked up by NAPA. My saying UAP is just an old habit.

Jim, will a TR3 head fit this engine?

It might happen to bolt on but I wouldn't expect it to work too well. You would need the TR3 intake and exhaust manifolds, as the ports are in different places. Then you'd be in to a pair of matching SU carbs, and a new exhaust system.
Might really go though - disconnect the governor (if you had figured out how to connect it anyway) rev it up, and keep up with the traffic on your street!
You might want to upgrade your brakes too :O
