Quadrant settings

I am trying to adjust my quadrant settings on my 1951 TO30 in order to the correct 2 1/2" inches. Unfortunity I do not have enough play due to the wear on the quadrant arm lever. Question is, can I weld this up and reshape it and make it work? Is there supposed to be any indentions on the shaft or was it originaly completly round?

Thanks again for all the great help!

I had the same problem on my 51 TED 20 (your TO30), but was able to adjust the quadrant lever fore and aft to give the correct response on the link arms. The 2 1/2" may have been OK on a new tractor, but 50+ years on I think it is OK to be a little more than that.

You are aiming for the situation where a plough mounted on the arms will hold at a given height, but when you give a gentle lift/heave (by hand) at the rearmost end of the plough, then the top link will sense this and lift the plough slightly.

As long as you can get that, you should be OK. Make sure your draft sensing spring on the top link is set correctly - you should be JUST able to rotate it by hand when a 2 furrow (2 bottom) plough is mounted and lifted.

Personally, I would not try welding and reshaping the cam - if you get the profile wrong your hydraulics will behave very badly indeed!!

I believe that Zane Sherman has/had (remanufactured(?)) cams - I am sure he was offering 'new' cams with his Zane Thang at one time - IF you can get your old cam off, it may be the best solution.

I found I had wear on the plate on the linkage that the cam rubs against. It had at least half its thickness worn away, maybe more. I welded it up and then ground it flat, and it seems OK, but I don't do any ploughing so can't be really sure.
Just another thing to think about (although you would have to have your lift cover off to gain access).
