I have a 1950 TO-20. I am having trouble with my power take off kicking out of gear, but only with the bush hog behind it. What could be the problem?

Gary is right about the ball detent wearing a groove in the shift rod so that it will come out of engagement. I did the same thing he did on my TE-20 when I had it apart. There is a remote possibility of reaching in through the left hand side transmission port and following the rod back to the engagement point. This would have to be done by "feel". If I remember correctly the nut that retains the rod's position is on quite tight and it may not be accessable either. However, if that nut can be loosened so that the rod can be rotated 180 degrees, then your problem will most likey be fixed.

I pulled one of these apart a couple of years ago. found the shifter rod to be worn where th detent ball engages it. I rotated the shifter rod 180 to "new ground" and put it back together with no further problems, I separated it right behind the transmission.

The PTO shifter, may not be engaged completely. Inspect the PTO shifter and the shifter plate. Also, you can remove the plate, and see if the coupler will slide completely over the splined end of the PTO. (inside end) Check the PTO end for any damage that would cause the coupler to not slide over the splines.
You should not have to hold the PTO shifter in place. You should be able to inspect without splitting

Could be worn gears. Do you have an overrun clutch installed? I think that's what it's called. If not and your brakes are super good it could be that if you stop real fast the inertia of the spinning bush hog is driving it out of gear.

Be safe, get an over run clutch. They're cheap.
