Flaky Starter Switch

We had some snow I needed to move so I went to the barn to start my '53 TO-30 day before yesterday for the first time in a few months.

I had a VERY hard time getting the starter switch to make contact. After moving the lever forward about 20 times I finally got a click, so I knew it had to be the switch. After about another 20 tries I got good contact and the tractor started on the first turn.

My question is: Presuming that I just need to replace the switch, how difficult is it and where can I find one? Or is there some other simple adjustment that might be causing this problem?

As you can tell, I don't have a shop manual.....

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ranch,
I pursued a lengthy course: rebuilt starter($100), replaced switches, solenoid(12V conversion) and wiring, only to discover my problem was concealed corrosion between the + battery post and the cable clamp. Duh. I keep getting these reminders to check the basics first. Maybe that's your problem also; my search began when it became necessary to push the starter button three or four times before there was real juice flowing to the starter. Good luck!

Further on your start switch. I have the same on my TEA20-85. Quite a simple thing to repair. Just be careful when you lift the cover plate on the forward end of the transmission that you are careful to tie up the plunger bar that comes to the bottom of the switch. Don't drop the cotter pin. If the contacts are badly burnt you can take the switch apart(carefully) and shim up the contact post with a insulating material. I used plastic shim stock material that can be obtained at your local machine shop. Make sure they are the same height, then reinstall. It is the best invention since sliced bread. You don't kill tractor drivers, because it won't start in gear.
If you contact me on the back burner I will scan a breakdown drawing for you and send.

Good luck.

The switch is very easy to fix. Remove the battery cables and then take out the three small screws that hold the bakerlite cap on. DO NOT REMOVE THE FOUR MOUNTING BOLTS.

Once the cap is off you can remove and clean the switch contacts. The switch will then be good for another 50 years.

Have fun

Thanks, Phillip. I'm presuming the screws and Bakelite cap you're referring to are under the plate at the top of the transmission?

Sounds easy enough, I'm sure I'll understand once I get in there.

Thanks, again.

At least on the TEA and I bet on your tractor too there is an adjustment. If you loosen the four bolts that hold the switch in place, it can slide a bit forward and back. I think moving it forward causes the contact to be made sooner.
(Easy thing to try.)
