I purchased a 1954 TO-30 in September. I came to discover that my tractor does not have a thermostat installed.

I bought a thermostat and as everybody probably knows, it is installed in the top radiator hose from the engine to radiator. The person at the tractor supply told me to install the thermostat with the dome toward the engine.

Based on installing thermostats in cars, this does not sound right to me. Additionally stamped on to the dome of the thermostat it says "To Rad." When I tested the unit in a pot of hot water it would open no matter which side I put in the water first.

Can someone please clarify which way is the correct way to intall it?

Thanks

Since I don't know what your thermostat looks like, it would be hard to tell you which way to install it. What's wrong with following the instructions and seeing if that works (i.e. if you put it in backward you'll overheat). You can always change it around and as long as you don't let it sit there and cook, there's no harm done.

Normally there is a small cylnder on the thermostat that contains a wax pellet that opens the thermostat. That should be facing the engine. Hope this helps.

When you tested it in a pot of hot water could you test it one side at the time? No? In your tractor, if closed, it can only sense heat on the side the element is on. Thus the element should be toward the engine. HTH.
