i recently purchased a 1951 to-30 and it has want sounds like to me a engine knock. the sound comes and goes.not to loud at low rpms but gets louder as i raise the rpms. but it is not constant. motor has good power and oil pressure. does not overheat. i have been told it may be a bent connecting rod or maybe bearings. any ideas of what it could be would appreciated. i ordered the service and parts manuals from this site should be here by nextweek.i am going to waite till i get them before going into the engine. thanks

Can you describe the sound a little more? Is it a heavy pounding or more like a tapping? Is in comming from the block or the head? Have you checked the timing (6o BTDC @ low idle, 400 rpm)to see that it's not over advanced?

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I need more information.

Billy, While it's hard to be definite when someone is describing a noise on a web page, a pounding sound in the lower end can be really bad news. It is probably your main bearings if it a pounding type noise. I would advise you to get a mechanic's opinion before you do anything else, but don't use the machine until you figure out and fix it. Hope this helps.
