which way do you hook up jumper cables & do you still hook up a battery charger pos to pos on 6 volt pos ground battery,(jumping would be with 12-neg ground)

Ray is exactly correct. Except I would not clip the second cable to a ground. Just touch it to a good ground on the tractor and the starter on the tractor will turn over fast, and then you can remove it quickly when it starts. Key must be on to start, of course. And as Ray says, most important thing is to have tractor out of gear or left rear wheel can run over you. By the way I explained this in detail as a reply to another post just a day or two ago, and you can easily find several descriptions of this in the archives. I've used this method for starting 6 volt positive ground tractors from 12 volt negative ground vehicles many times, as I have tractors scattered about, not all near my shop, and it always works and never any problem with either battery or ignition, as long as you do it exactly this way (bypassing all the tractor ignition and battery).

POS to POS, NEG. to NEG... If you have to use 12v, you have a problem. Continued use of 12 volt jump start can cause the 6v battery to explode, no matter where it's hooked up. This is from experience. If it wont jump with 6v. you have a problem!!!

Not so. You aren't reading the directions as Ray and I gave them. Tractor battery is NOT involved.

I think my reading is pretty good. If the 6v battery is in the system, and you have to use 12v...YOU HAVE A PROBLEM... If you induce 12v into the system you stand a chance of exploding the 6v battery from the gases, no matter where you hook it up. If I'm wrong, then we should be able to use 12v generators with 6v batteries... OF COURSE, ANYONE CAN JUMP A 6V WITH A 12V AND MAKE IT SPIN FASTER, BUT THE RIGHT WAY IS TO CONVERT TO12V. Agree?

Battery chargers always attach pos to pos and neg to neg posts. When using a 12V battery for jumping, the safest way is to bypass the battery and attach directly to the starter- ONLY after insuring the the brakes are locked and gearshift is in neutral! The starter motor has no polarity, just attach one jumper cable to a starter mounting bolt and ONLY AFTER INSURING THE GEARSHIFT IS IN NEUTRAL clip the othe jumper cable to the starter cable stud. Of course you'll remove the cables immediately upon starting the tractor. Don't perform this operation if you feel the slightest bit hesitant about my methods.

I've used this method and it works like a charm. Also there's no danger from explosive battery gases igniting from a spark. It does help to have someone work the choke for you.

It would be a bad move to connect the batteries together. The 6 volt battery will object to having 12 volts attached to it. At the minimum it will emit flammable gases, which can ignite via a nearby spark which you WILL get when you are hooking up or disconnecting the cables.. Don't do it. Use the method these other guys describe.
