i was hearing a knocking / pounding noise comming from the engine on my 1951 to-30. tonite i pull the valve cover off and found some bent push rods. two of them were slightly bent and one had approx. 30 degree bend in it. it had a place on it where you could see it had been hitting the inside of the block. i think this is where my noise was comming from. i straightened it the best i could in a vise and reinstalled it. the rocker was tight on this push rod whether the valve was opened or closed. ithink they were over tightened by someone. i backed off the adjustment a little and started the engine. now the noise i was getting is greatly reduced. only get some noise at high rpm's and just like before noise is not constant. before i was getting noise at low and high rpm's but was not constant.it would come and go. my question is can i get push rods at auto parts shop or do i need to get them from m-f dealer? i have already ordered manuels they should be here next week. when i get them and new push rods i will install new push rods and adjust valves correctly as i think this cause of noise. i now feel better as i dont think it is a bearing problem. i also pulled carb. off because gas would flow out of it. i would get it started and have to turn shut off valve almost off to keep it from flooding. i found float had pin hole in it and was not floating enough to shut off fuel flow i should be able to patch float with j.b. weld as i have did this before on lawnmower engines. i will keep ya'll informed on my progress. i love this forum it is very helpful. i'm new to this so i'm sure i will have many more questions. alot of questions i have had have already been answered by reading the archives. thanks guys.

Billy, I guess the pounding wasn't really coming from the lower end, huh? I had a hard time finding new pushrods when I had the head rebuilt. I finally got them from a salvage yard. I did see some advertised by Value Bilt so you might try them. You can also try Montes Equipment. They're a Continental Engines parts dealer.
Glad to hear that is was the only bent pushrods!

Glad to hear you're making progress. It's a lot of fun sluething the problems on these old gals. Unless, of course, you're stuck a half mile from home on a sideways hill.

billy j.

Some years back I had the same thing on my TO-30. A bent pushrod. My mechanic got a replacement for me. I never asked from where but I know he dealt mostly with NAPA.
