I bought a Ferguson AO-16 2 bottom plow. I'm trying to get it into shape to use this spring. I've got a couple questions...

* Can you still buy the coulter discs? One of my coulters has a bad "bearing" and is cutting at an angle. The part that I need is the bearing and flange that attaches to the disc. The grease cups aren't in real good shape either, but a new bearing would help. Not sure if I'm using the right terms. I guess I'll just leave it off if I can't fix it.

* Does anyone have a picture showing the proper configuration? Someone has been at mine, and I think that it is shifted over funny on the draw bar.

* Why did they make the 3 point attachment pins so short anyway ha. I can't get my sabilizer bars on.

* What color was this originally? Mine is blue now.

Thanks for any help, Bryan

Byron, I completely took apart, sanded and twice painted a Dearborn 2 bottom couple years ago. Used both coulters for about 10 minutes and took them off. The field I was plowing had never been plowed before since it was in the middle of a forrest where I had to cut off balsam trees of a 6" diameter stumpage. My 49 fergie with plow ripped them right out and kept plowing slowly in 2nd gear. Coulters just trapped the sod and interfered with plowing. When taken off it was a real pleasure to look back at the furrows. I may be wrong, but coulters I believe are supposed to cut the earth prior to the share. With good shares, I really don't see the need for this. Others may disagree, but worked beautifully on virgin ground without the coulters.

Just for fun, here is the plow...

I've found out on another site that the plow started out as a gray color.

As for the disc, I guess that I don't know what to call this kind of disc; what I really need is the flange thing in the center of the disc that rides between those bearing cups; when you buy a new disc do you get a new flange with it, and what is the correct name for it? I've got no problem with buying a whole set if that is what it takes.

Have you found anywhere to get parts for your plow? I have the same plow but am in need of a few parts.

I just bought one that looks exactly like yours (including color) except mine has slotted mouldboards. Mine also does not have the furrow wheel I see on yours. How important is that piece?

The coulters look like ones used after 1950 on a Dearborn (Ford) plow, compare the parts at a New-Holland dealer that sold Ford in the past to see if they match.

I have a Dearborn plow that is similiar to yours. The front coulter blade you have is not original. I think the original blades are 16 inches in diameter and are smooth. New blades just come with the bolt hole pattern and center hole to match the old one. The rest is reused from the old one. I have rebuilt several of these coulters. The original center section is just a cylinder with a hole to fit the through bolt and its outside diamter matches the inside diameter of the coulter housing that rivets to the blade. Of course most are completley wallowed out. The good news is that it can be fixed, but it requires a lathe. I take the old bearing housing and bore it to fit a bronze bushing and press it in. Then I get a round cold rolled bar to fit inside diameter of the bushing and bore a through hole in it for the bolt. Other than that is requires going through implement scrap yards to find one that is not worn completely out.

Bryan,

That's nice looking. I am not real sure what part you are looking for. Although, it sounds like you just need a bearing. That is a scalloped colter.

I am getting near the end of my AO-14 refurbishment. Sat. I painted the major pieces. I have completely stripped, de-rusted and painted all the smaller pieces. All I have left are the mould boards and the frame. One mould board is nearly done de-rusting in the electrolysis tank.

My plow was painted a rust red and had the origional gray underdeath.

I am sure yours will look great when it's done.

Jeff

I'd like to here what color they were also, mine is a 2 bottom 12" one. I broke a point on mine this summer and with shipping it cost me almost $60.If I keep this one I'm going to paint it, but I may trade for a newer 12" 2 bottom ford one.

Stabilizer bars are not used on a turning plow. If it is properly adjusted it will track true and make gradual turns easily. Unless you have lots of matted grass you can probably do without the coulters. I never use them and only rarely does my plow clog up. The reason I never use coulters is cause I ain't never had none!:)

Thanks, yes, I'll probably just leave the coulter off- these fields had corn last year and are still pretty clean. I have to travel to the local farm store and see what they have; they do have some replacement discs, but I don't know about the bearing. I've never used this plow before, so I didn't know about not needing the bars.

jstpa- if you find out the color let me know. It looks like mine was gray, then blue.
